Her fever broke at ten that night, and after she had a shower, she went downstairs, suddenly famished.
Seth and Levi were sitting on the couch, watching a baseball game.
âSeth said I could stay up a little,â Levi protested, cutting off any comment she was going to make about him being up past his bedtime.
She leaned against the archway. âItâs okay. Are the Jays winning?â
Seth made a face. âNo.â Then he smiled at her. âYou look better.â
âI feel a bit more human.â
âWant some soup?â He got up, handing the TV changer to Levi, then pointed for her to go into the kitchen.
She sat at the table and let him reheat a bowl of the chicken and tomato soup, then crumbled some tortilla chips on top. Summer was rightâit was perfect, and even more so because someone other than she had prepared it.
Seth went back to watch the game with Levi, then when it was over she sent her nephew upstairs. âYou can read for a bit, but lights out soon,â she warned.
âBut Iâm not tired.â
âBut itâs still bedtime,â she countered. âRead for a bit and youâll discover the tired, I promise.â
Levi slid a glance at Seth, like he might test her by trying to get the other adult involved, but he thought better of it and stomped upstairs.
She took a deep breath and went back to collect her bowl from the kitchen table. Seth followed. âDo you need anything else before I go?â
She shook her head. âI feel heaps better, thank you. Iâll probably be up for a while, since I slept all day, but thatâs not the worst problem to have.â
âI could stay?â He held up his hands. âNo funny business, I know youâre still sick. Just to talk? If your throat can handle it?â
She gave him a half-smile. âIâd like that.â
She went upstairs to check on Summer, and give her the same read-for-a-bit suggestion as sheâd given Levi, then told them sheâd be back up in thirty minutes for lights out.
Back downstairs, Seth had made her a cup of hot water and lemon juice, with honey. Was this seduction at thirty-seven? No funny business and a never-ending supply of soothing beverages? When she was better, she would remember this, and reward him for it.
âThank you,â she whispered as she settled on the couch, in the corner, with her legs curled to one side. He sprawled near her feet, leaning on the back of the sectional so he was looking at her fully.
âYou get that kind of complaining at bedtime every night?â
âThat was nothing. That was the one-and-done version. And theyâre such good kids, they really are, and they miss their mom, butâ¦â She trailed off and breathed in some of the hot lemon steam. âGrowing up, August and I were on our own for bedtime. Which isnât better! And Iâve lived alone for almost sixteen years. I will say, theyâre better roommates than I had in university. But at my core, Iâm a quiet, no-nonsense, straight-laced teacher. I like to clearly state an expectation and have it met.
